Whoa That Cost How Much?!!

Updated: Dec 31, 2019

I had to turn it off, the OU/OHIO STATE game. I hate Texas and yet that is the game I'm watching. I haven't even been drinking tonight, and I am watching Texas vs. Cal. Hell is probably freezing over, because there is a small part of me, way down inside rooting for Texas. I must be ill. I will hold my husband responsible for my sour mood over the rest of the CBF season. After all it's his fault. I was never really an OU fan until I married him. He kind of rubbed off on me. So I will blame him. Sounds perfectly logical to me.

I've been working on my third book in my Damien Kaine series. There are days I just don’t want to do it. Then there are days I can’t stop writing and I get nothing done at my house. Dinner winds up on the table later than normal, oh well.

My husband asked me if I ever take a day off from writing. I’m either writing my next story, or editing a story, or messing with this damn website. Currently I am getting my book covers finalized. And to hell if I’m being paid. Actually this little hobby cost me money. If I get picked up by an agent I may not even be able to use the covers. But I am taking steps in case I end up going the Indie publishing route.

Granted I’ve been able to keep my expenses down. That is the key to doing this. Who knows if I will get paid for this, but at least it isn’t as much as having golf as a hobby. Or buying drugs.

Here are some tips to keep your costs down. First, pick your website host/carrier wisely. You can get an introductory price making it pretty cheap, but you have to pay close attention to what the renewal cost will be. You don’t need a lot of add-ons either.

You can also use something like booklaunch. It is just for books. One website for each book you have out. It's free, and you choose from templates, it may be limiting for some, but it will work. BUY your domain name now. Even if you aren't ready to put the site up. Buy it anyway. (I use GO DADDY, but you can find them everywhere.)

Research which items you really need. There are tons of free instruction on how to set up an author website. I have used both Joanna Penn and some stuff by Tim Grahl.

You will need to have an email service. There is no way you can keep up with email correspondence once your subscriber list starts going. There are several out there, I use Mailchimp. They don’t cost anything until you reach 2001 subscribers. Once you reach that limit there is a yearly/monthly fee, but I found it very reasonable. Just do your research. There may be one that suits you better.

I suggested in one of my early posts making friends with editors from a writing conference so that maybe you can get a few chapters edited to give you an idea of how your writing is going. So when it comes time to choose an editor, choose wisely. This is where most of your money will go.

I use Mari Farthing out of OKC. She does copy, line, and content editing. After the first round I make all the suggested corrections, she re-edits and then proofreads it as well.

You want to make sure you like your editor and that you trust her/him. If you don’t quite vibe with an editor, it can make for a contentious relationship. It’s bad enough someone is telling you what you did wrong concerning something you just poured your heart into. If you don’t like them, you may smack them. That wouldn’t be good.

The point here, stick with the basics until you start making money. You have to put out a good product. So use your money for editing.

Remember, don't get discouraged. Join a writers group. You can get a lot of feedback from them. They can help with stuff before you send it to an editor. Having other authors in your circle will help you tremendously. NOW GO WRITE.

I write crime fiction horror, thriller, and paranormal novels. My time in the Coast Guard and my degree in Forensic Chemistry helps me create fantastic stories.

If I'm not writing, I am binge watching Netflix and probably drinking whiskey.
